Abstract
A major effort of the NMFS is to monitor and assess living marine resources of the United States on a continuing basis. Remote sensing offers two distinct opportunities to obtain data on the status of oceanic resources: (1) the direct sensing of living resources; (2) the measurement of broad physical, chemical, and biological conditions of the ocean which have an inter-related effect upon the resources themselves. The objective of the new NMFS remote sensing program is to recruit new tools to locate, survey, and monitor living marine resources, and to facilitate the incorporation of these tools into ongoing survey and harvesting procedures.
