The spring population census utilizing two aircrafts was initiated March 3, 1970 and terminated March 24, 1970. Impassable roads made it impossible to run driving census lines until after the height of booming activity. The total Attwater's prairie chicken population was estimated to be 1,440 birds. Refugio, Austin, Colorado and Goliad counties contained the bulk of prairie chickens counted.en_US
