This thesis focuses on identifying some of the motivations of individuals who utilize the beach facilities of Galveston Island State Park. Once the motives for using a beach were determined, homogeneous user groups were identified based on motive profiles so that management implications could more easily be understood and applied. A systematic random sample of park camping permits for the year of February, 1976, to February, 1977, produced a sample of 318 park visitors to receive a mail questionnaire. A 66 percent response rate, after followup, was achieved.en
