Abstract
Physical modifications associated with excavation and disposal of sediments are the single most obvious manifestation of human impacts on Galveston Bay. Since the close of the War for Southern Independence, increased shipping in the bay has led to channelization, current training, and protective structures. Further, development of the bay periphery has led to constructive dredge-and-fill activities not directly associated with navigation. The Center for Research in Water Resources (CRWR) has recently completed a study for the Galveston Bay National Estuary Program (GBNEP) to quantify dredging and filling in the bay. This is the first in a three-part series of articles summarizing the results of that study.
