New information available from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reveals that industries discharge hundreds of millions of pounds of toxic chemicals into the Houston Ship Channel and its feeder streams each year. The Channel with its contaminant load drains into the Galveston Bay, a national estuary whose rich natural productivity is vital to fish, shell fish and tourism industries worth over 700 million dollars to the regional economy each year. This report presents evidents that the Bay ecosystem is threatedned by toxic substances and that discharges into the Ship Channel are an important part of the problem.en_US
