The Elutriate Test provides a measure of the change in concentration of certain contaminants at the disposal site. Information is lacking which relates the release of these chemicals to their effect on biota. The paper discusses research to determine the biological effects of the soluble chemicals released from sediments during dredging and disposal operations. Chemical analyses of the elutriate defined the concentration of selected nutrients and heavy metals. Biological assessment documented the response of selected test organisms to the elutriate. Correlations between chemical composition and biological response could be of value in establishing disposal criteria for dredged material. The bioassay work was performed on samples from Ashtabula Harbor and the Houston ship channelen_US
