The 1st chapter of this reference book on mollusks examines the historical background and physical characteristics of the Texas coast (USA). Chapter 2 illustrates the general features of the mollusk and the basic molluscan pattern. Shell identification is discussed, and classes of the subphylum Conchifera are described. Chapter 3 provides systematic descriptions for more than 325 molluscs. Descriptions are arranged according to class: Aplacophora, Polyplacophora, Monoplacophora, Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Scaphopoda, and Cephlapoda. Included is such material as geologic range, ecological information, references to other studies, the original citation and translation of biological names. Each species is illustrated. The final 2 chapters describe a shell collection trip and beachcombing. An appendix (outline of classification, type terms, map sources, publications molluscan environments), glossary, bibliography, and index supplement the text. Included are 24 color plates and numerous photographs, line drawings, diagrams and maps. The volume is an expanded and updated edition of Sea Shells of the Texas Coast, by Jeanne Andrews (1971). It will be of interest for the amateur and specialist alike.en_US
