Abstract

An attempt was made to investigate the life history of this centric marine diatom from an environmental approach. Major environmental parameters, such as light (both day-length and intensity), temperature, salinity, and nitrate. These morphological changes in the diatom were observed over time in relation to the varying growth parameters in an effort to correlate behavior and phases in the life history with seasonality. The life histoy of Rhizosolenia herbetata forma semispina included vegetative cells, resting spores and a previously underscribed oogamous sexual phase resulting in the formation of auxospores. These changes in response to environmental conditions are presented.
