During June-December 1973 and 1974, 81 samples were collected with 13.7 m otter trawls from aboard a research vessel in the same areas that commercial shrimp vessels were fishing on the Texas brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) grounds. This study was done to estimate the amounts and kinds of organisms captured during shrimping operations and to estimate the amounts discarded and times when most discarding occurred. P. aztecus, Callinectes sapidus, Micropogon undulatus, and Peprilus burti accounted for 67% by weight of the 115 species recorded. Most small (less than or equal to 112 mm) commercial shrimp, other invertebrates and fish were discarded at sea.
