dc.description.abstract | Dr. Frank Hermann Rudenberg (1927-1994) was Associate Professor, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, School of Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Texas Medical Branch, 1958-1994. These records comprise Rudenberg’s activity in the Sierra Club, which includes correspondence, reports, legal records, publications, news clippings, press releases and Letters to the Editor, official Sierra Club records for the Galveston Regional Group and the Lone Star Chapter (Texas), Corps of Engineers Permit Applications, and a subject file about issues pertaining to the Texas Coast dating from his membership in the Galveston Group in 1971. By 1972, he assumed the role of Coastal Coordinator in the Executive Committee for the Lone Star Chapter and became very effective in monitoring the Corps of Engineers’ Permit Application process. He regularly responded to these development plans described in the permits and effectively led campaigns against proposals he considered destructive to the environment. The most significant issues include: George Mitchells’ development plans for Eckert Bayou (Pirates Cove) and the Oil Terminal on Pelican Island (superport); EPA’s plans to Incinerate-at-Sea hazardous materials in the Gulf of Mexico; and the sludge pits containing hazardous materials illegally dumped by Maginnes Industrial Maintenance Corporation in Galveston’s West Bay. Rudenberg and the Galveston Regional Group successfully sued the Corps of Engineers for a faulty environmental impact statement regarding the Oil Terminals on Pelican Island. | en_US |
