| dc.description.abstract | From 1973 to 1980, biologists from federal, state, and private organizations directed a cooperative survey and census of waterbird colonies in Texas. Twenty-six species were recorded in more than 300 coastal and inland colonies. With the possible exception of the cattle egret, brown pelican, white pelican, and black skimmer, populations of most species were stable. Cattle egret populations appear to have stabilized in coastal areas but may have increased in inland colonies. Brown pelican numbers increased dramatically during the survey period but white pelican numbers declined. Black skimmer populations were stable or have declined at a slow rate. Colony sites are numbered and located on appropriate maps. Tables accompanying the maps list numbers of nesting pairs of each species and give a brief description of the colony site.
