Abstract
A method for estimating the direct market economic impact of a sport fishery is developed and appled to red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) anglers in Texas. The commercial value of angler-landed fish is subtracted from trip expenditures to estimate the direct market value of the angling experience. This value was $29.7 million in 1976, and the statewide employment impact was 3,193 person-years. This method can be used for comparing relative economic values of sportfishing with commercial fishing.
