The Buffalo Bayou and tributaries study area comprises nearly 1,034 square miles in Harris and parts of Fort Bend and Waller Counties and drains most of the urbanized area of Houston and surrounding suburban communities. The study area has experienced extensive urbanization in the recent past and contained a population of about 1,990,000 in 1980. Portions of the study area have experienced damaging floods in recent years, and continuing urbanization will substantially increase these problems in the future. The primary focus of this comprehensive investigation has been to resolve or reduce the impacts of urban flooding in the study area. A secondary water resource need is the development of additional surface water supplies to meet expected future demands and to reduce ground water pumping to keep land subsidence under control. Tributary drainage basins within the study area have been evaluated separately because of their relative independence as drainage conveyance systems. Studies have considered the relationships between basins in evaluating comprehensive solutions to the flooding problems.en_US
