Tourism is one of the biggest businesses in Texas and coastal communities rely on their beaches and bays to attract tourists. As a result, ensuring public access to the shoreline is of central importance to coastal community's ecotourism economy. In 1991 the Texas legislation passed the Coastal Coordination Act. The Texas Coastal Management Program (CMP) in 1997 made Texas one of 30 states to have a federally approved coastal program. The Coastal Coordination Council oversees the program and works on enhancing public access to Texas beaches and bays. This guide is designed to help the user locate a variety of public access sites, National Wildlife Refuges, and Wildlife Management Areas along the Texas coast. The guide highlights the 5 areas that make up the Texas Coast: Southeast Texas, Houston-Galveston, the Golden Crescent, the Coastal Bend, and the Lower Rio Grande Valley. A brief historical overview of each coastal county with information on population, land area, local economy, and a brief description of the primary recreational activities available are all provided. In addition there are maps and grids showing locations and available activities and facilities.en_US
