Abstract

The Texas Board of Professional Land Surveyors (TBPLS) has announced that it is considering changes to its Rules that would extend its jurisdiction over certain aspects of GIS mapping in Texas. The Board has asked for public comment. This move by the TBPLS is not inconsistent with the efforts of other states to regulate and license certain practices of the GIS community. Topics discussed include the issues behind this initiative by the TBPLS, Model Law 2000, a current assessment of the effort, who may be affected, and an action plan for GIS practitioners to follow.
