Abstract

The Baytown Nature Center has witnessed the ebb and flow of human life for the past 11,000 to 12,000 years. Located on the Brownwood Peninsula, the Baytown Nature Center is bordered by the Houston Ship Channel and is directly east of the San Jacinto Battleground. Archaeological evidence and historical documents from the area chronicle the lives of Native Americans, Spanish and French explorers, members of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred, and more recently workers in nearby oil and chemical refineries. Early Texans such as David G. Burnett, Ashbel Smith, and Sam Houston made their homes on nearby bays. Few geographical locations in Texas have witnessed so much. The Baytown Nature Center will be a rare opportunity for children and adults to learn about and enjoy their historical heritage.
