Abstract

The purpose of this manual is to familiarize individuals with the freshwater environment. The physical/chemical parameters and biological communities present are useful tools in determining the overall quality of a stream or lake. This manual was written with the intention of making it user friendly; therefore, the material is presented in a nontechnical manner and should be beneficial to individuals with a wide range of expertise. The keys to freshwater invertebrates, fish and plants are meant to familiarize the user with only the most common groups in Texas lakes and streams. The reader should refrain from forcing an organism into a group described in this manual. A reference list is included at the end of the manual to provide individuals with more detailed information and complete keys.
