Abstract

The National Ocean Service (NOS) has developed a prototype nowcast/forecast system to predict water level and currents within Galveston Bay and the Houston Ship Channel. NOS has continued the development and application of the Galveston Bay three-dimensional circulation model to include an emergence/submergence scheme and flux-corrected salinity transport. In addition, a high-resolution ship channel model more accurately predicts currents within the channel. These two models form the hydrodynamic component of the prototype nowcast/forecast system. Other models are also integrated within the system to enable daily 24- hour nowcasts and 36-hour forecasts. To evaluate the performance of the system, a high-resolution Acoustic Doppler Current Profile/CTD survey of the Houston Ship Channel was conducted
