Abstract

1939 census showed 23 coastal nesting sites; 23 species with a total of 40,000 nesting birds. 1950 census showed 26 coastal nesting sites with a population of 46,500 and 26 species. However, list of species shows decline in number of rare or enangered species - Spoonbills, Brown Pelicans, Cranes, Oystercatchers - with greatest increase in numbers found among terns and skimmers. The results were due to increased industrialization and population growth.
