Serving as the port for the largest petrochemical complex in the world, the Houston Ship Channel is part of the third largest port in the United States. However, the ship channel was declared biologically dead in October of 1970 due to dissolved oxygen (DO) dropping to near zero. Presently, the water in the Houston Ship Channel is cleaner, fish are thriving, plants are growing, and people are going back to the Galveston Bay beaches.
