In spring 1971, juvenile brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus) were abundant in samples from the upper coastal bays of Texas. With temperature and salinity relatively high, their growth was rapid (estimated growth rates ranged from 1.2mm/day, Lower Laguna Madre, to 2.2mm/day, Galveston Bay). The 1971 Texas shrimp catch was 53.7 million pounds. The dockside value was $64.2 million.
