Waterfowl began to arrive on the Texas coastal marshes in August. Departures began in late February and continued through May. Important waterfowl concentration points include Red Fish Bay, San Antonio Bay, Copano Bay, Mission Bay, Galveston Bay, Lake Surprise. Factors determining such sites are not fully known. Four census counts made in October, December, January, and February indicated a peak population for January, when approximately 2,000,000 waterfowl were counted. Rice is an important item of the waterfowl diet, especially in the Texas rice belt.
