The planning started shortly after the great hurricane of 8 September 1900 took an estimated 6,000 lives. The project, with additions has been eminently successful. The ASBPA recognizes this achievement by presenting the 1990 Coastal Projects Award to the County of Galveston, The City of Galveston, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District.en-UShurricane protectionstorm surgeshoreline protectionProtection of Galveston, Texas, From Overflows by Gulf Storms: Grade-Raising, Seawall and EmbankmentShore & BeachThe Coast-LineASBPA Coastal Project Award for 1990Article
