Abstract

Biological control agents have been remarkably successful in controlling many pests, but they have also damaged the environment. In fact, historically they have led to extinctions of nearly 100 species of animals worldwide, which has only been recognized in recent times. In addition, pest species have prospered due to high reproductive rates and genetic mutative abilities. A comprehensive control policy should be based on long term goals rather than short term returns.
