Comparative osteology of the weakfishes (Cynoscion) of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States (Pisces: Sciaenidae).

After the osteology of Cynoscion nebulosus is described in detail, three other species, C. arenarius, C. nothus and C. regalis are compared to it. The four species studied can be broken into two phyletic lines; one containing C. nothus and C. regalis, the other comprised of C. nebulosus and C. arenarius. Among the four species, C. nothus seems to be the most specialized. General differences in the osteology of the four species are discussed. A generic diagnosis is given at the beginning of every division and subdivision. Generic relationships are suggested based on the osteology of the four species.
