Abstract

In recent years public interest in the management of air, land, and water resources in Texas has grown. Use of these resources will shape future patterns of economic and social development. This concern has produced water development plans for the entire state and regional land resource management efforts by governmental agencies. Increased awareness about the impact of resource use decisions on private and public interests is most noticeable along the Texas coast, where interacting social and natural systems present considerable opportunities and constraints. Current and projected coastal economic activity, the major factors affecting coastal development, and the role of government in coastal resource decisions are reviewed.
