Prior to 1951, oyster harvesting in the Galveston Bay area had all but disappeared and no oyster beds had been approved in this area for many years. As a result of an extensive sampling and laboratory testing program of these areas conducted by the Galveston County Pollution Survey, certain oyster producing regions have been proven to be of satisfactory quality to comply with the minimum standards as set forth in the Public Health Bulletin No. 295 Manual of Recommended Practice for Sanitary Control of the Shellfish Industry, which is published by the U.S. Public Health Service. This sampling program has been continuous since February, 1950 and plans call for continued sampling to ascertain improvement or deterioration of quality of the oysters and their overlaying waters.en_US
