Abstract
Variations in nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentrations in Galveston Bay were studied in order to identify the regulating factors. The phosphate maximum is proportional to the benthic regeneration of phosphorus at the end of the summer. It is assumed that additional control is due to geochemical and physical processes including particle sorting and buffering. Nitrate concentrations are inversely proportional to salinity. Nutrient concentrations are not proportional to salinity or temperature and are therefore less predictable.
