Abstract

The Neches River has experienced salt water intrusion during periods of low flow since the late 1800's. The Lower Neches Valley Authority has constructed temporary barrier structures on the Neches River and on Pine Island Bayou when necessary to hold back the salt water. This report addresses the potential environmental impacts of a permanent salt water barrier at a site located at river mile 29.7 which is downstream of the confluence of the Neches River and Pine Island Bayou. It is believed that a permanent structure will allow relatively unobstructed use of the river and provide water quality benefits.
