dc.description.abstractThe Clear Creek, Texas, flood control project would provide flood protection to the rapidly urbanizing areas adjacent to the stream in Brazoria, Galveston, and Harris Counties through enlargement and rectification of the natural stream channel. The sharper bends would be cut off to improve the channel alignment, resulting in an improved channel length of about 31 miles. The size of the improved channel would vary from a bottom width of 200 feet at the lower end to 76 feet in the upper reaches. The improvement, as authorized, would provide full protection from floods having a frequency of occurrence of once in about 100 years. The removal of brush, undergrowth, weeds, and some trees within the banks of the improved floodway will remove natural habitat and vegetative cover for small animals and birds. Excavation will eliminate relatively small amounts of marsh land. Temporary increase of turbidity during construction would have no permanent effect on water quality.en_US
