Abstract

This article discusses the successes and failures using examples of the U.S. environmental efforts implemented under the Clean Water Act. The topics discussed included pollution sources, water quality problems, nutrient problems, productivity/BOD relationship, oxygen demand delay in sediments, nitrogen transformation and removal, and remedial action. The Milwaukee river study and the study in Venice are two examples illustrating the topics listed above.
