The thesis of this publication is that another broad ecosystem - the wetlands, bays, estuaries, and offshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico - also has experienced major alterations through a variety of human activities, including those of the petroleum industry. However, such changes notwithstandind, this region remains viable and capable of supporting one of the largest combined fish and wildlife biomasses on the North American continent, if not the world.
