Abstract
Oil, and to a lesser extent, gas recovery activities in many localities result in the production of a byproduct, produced water. Middleditch (1985) gathered and summarized the published literature pertaining to disposal of produced water in the marine environment. As a complement to that report, this publication summarizes unpublished research reports, dissertations and theses, and other technical reports (and some published papers not reviewed by Middleditch) relating to environmental effects of disposal of produced water. The papers are not strictly limited to marine waters - some papers reporting on brine effects in fresh water and estuaries are also included.
