Abstract
A review of literature concerning prairie chickens was conducted which included over 700 articles, bulletins and theses. Landowners were contacted to gain information on habitat and population estimates. Regularly occupied habitat in Texas has been reduced to approximately 234,000 acres according to Lehman, 1968. In 1968, there was an estimated 1,073 Attwater's prairie chickens occupying suitable habitat along the Texas gulf coast. The single most important factor attributed to the decline of the Attwater's prairie chicken was habitat destruction. Other factors included the elimination of burning as a range management tool, disease, parasitism, widespread use of pesticides and abnormal rainfall, especially during April and May.
