Abstract

This report features several new initiatives for the Coastal Coordination Council (Council) and the Coastal Management Program (CMP). First, this year, the Council was proud to participate in the Coastal Impact Assistance Program, awarding $6.3 million of its portion ($7,454,756) of the total state award ($17,163,941) to 11 coastal projects. The remaining $1.1 million will be awarded by the Council at the end of calendar year 2002. Many of these projects will conserve coastal wetlands and protect important coastal habitats. Second, the Fourth Texas Coastal Issues Conference was held last winter in Corpus Christi, bringing 420 attendees, 84 speakers, and 37 sponsors together to address topics such as water planning and freshwater inflows, shoreline management, shoreline boundaries and public access, and ecotourism. In addition to these efforts, the Council has successfully continued the development of a Coastal Nonpoint Source Pollution Control Program, the implementation of the Permit Streamlining Initiative, the funding of local projects through the CMP grants program, and the review of other issues of coastal concern.
