Abstract

The Brazoz Island Harbor Channel requires maintenance dredging every two years. Much of the sedement dredged is ebach quality sand. Prior to 1988 dredging operations, sediments dredged from the chanenl were discharges at a designated offshore placement area. to reintroduce the dredged sediments into the littoral system, a nearchore berm was constructed in 1988. To date over 2.5 million cubic yards of dredged material have been used to benefit the beaches of South Padre Island. This paper covers the design, construction and monitoring of the berm and beach, and includes a discussion of the cooperative efforts between the town and the Corps. Beach monitoring has aided in the lon-term management of the material to determine the best location to place the material for maximum benefit to the beaches of South Padre Island.
