Reed belts have died back in parts of central and eastern Europe during the past decades. European Research Programme on Reed Die-back and Progression (EUREED) is the organization tasked with monitoring and management of these areas. It was to accomplish this by examining eutrophication, water table management, temperature, and genetic variations. From 1993-94, the changing conditions of organic material and pollution were more subtle than the more active change in the carbohydrate cycling. The latter is the change in plant tissue structure primarily brought on by stagnant water tables. In this article, land and water reeds were compared to mark the effects of nitrogen exposure.
