Galveston Bay National Estuary Program

Abstract

The Galveston Bay estuary system is of national significance because of its productivity in terms of commercial and sport fishing, its recreational value, and its industrial shipping uses. In response to the Water Quality Act of 1987, the EPA established the Galveston Bay National Estuary Program (GBNEP) in 1988. Its purpose was to develop a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) that would address specific pollution, development, or overuse concerns as they applied to this estuarine system. This report outlines the six major tasks required of the GBNEP as well as a timeline for expected completions.
