Abstract

Timely documentation of the location, abundance, and change in coastal wetlands is critical to their conservation and to effective management of marine fisheries. The rapid changes occurring in these valuable wetlands require monitoring on a 1 to 5 year cycle. Therefore, NOAA, within its Coastal Ocean Program, is initiating a cooperative interagency and State and Federal effort to map coastal wetlands and adjacent upland cover and change in the coastal region of the United States every 2 to 5 years, and to annually monitor areas of significant change.
