Abstract

The revival of the oyster bar has meant more business for US shellfish growers. Production in Texas has doubled recently but a decline in rainfall now threatens the industry, according to a new report. Centred on Galveston Bay, the Texas oyster industry has suffered many fluctuations. Output dropped to 40,000 lb some years back compared with the current harvest of 1.2m lb, worth $2m to producers. But climatic cycles dramatically affect oyster growth and in Texas the weather has taken a downturn. State oyster managers have warned of the onset of a dry period which is encouraging predator
