Abstract

Sixty-two of the one hundred papers presented at the Fourth International Symposium on Land Subsidence (FISOLS) are included in this report. The purposes of this symposium were: 1) to bring together international interdisciplinary specialists on the problems of land subsidence and to present results of research and practice in the subject, 2) to exchange with all participants their experiences related to cause, effect, control, and remediation of subsidence, 3) to promote technology transfer between the various disciplines and countries represented at the meeting, and 4) to evaluate the advance of knowledge taking place on this subject since 1984 and thus chart a path for future research on land subsidence. The papers included include the following topics: 1) groundwater withdrawal, 2) oil and gas withdrawal, 3) mining, 4) earth fissures, 5) sinkholes and organic deposits, 6) environmental factors, 7) coastal and inland flooding, 8) instrumentation and measurement, 9) remedial measures, and 10) theory and modeling.
