Abstract

This paper describes briefly an inventory of coastal wetlands of the USA compiled by the Strategic Assessment Branch (SAB) of the Ocean Assessments Division of the Office of Oceanography and Marine Assessment, National Ocean Service (NOS), and the Beaufort Laboratory of the Southeast Fisheries Center, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), both components of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Information is presented on the extent of salt marshes, fresh marshes, tidal flats, and swamps in individual coastal counties for twenty-two coastal states in the contiguous USA, excluding the Great Lakes. The inventory represents the most complete and comprehensive national compilation to date. It relies heavily on the previous work of many Federal and state agencies, particularly the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). The data base should contribute to better understanding, and ultimately management, of the coastal wetland resources of the USA.
