Abstract

Sand dunes give resilience to the barrier shoreline and act as a front line of defense against tropical storms and hurricanes by absorbing the force of storm surge, high waves, and wind. Sand dunes help to prevent inland property loss and the loss of lives. This manual describes simple, low-cost methods that can be used to preserve, repair, and enhance sand dunes. It summarizes laws and regulations that may apply to dune improvement projects. This manual also includes sources for other information and technical help.
