Abstract

A topographic map accurately represents the natural and manmade features of the land. USGS topographic maps are compiled to National Map Accuracy Standards using modern mapping techniques. The shape and elevation of the terrain are portrayed by contour lines while specific features such as roads, towns, water areas, and vegetation are portrayed by map symbols and colors. These are 7.5 minute topographic maps. Included in this citation are two maps of the Jetties Quadrangle. One is an original map published in 1977, the second map is a reduced photocopy published in 1970. The second copy, a reduced photocopy, has the following inscription: According to: 'Army Engineers and Western Expansion' provided by Custodian of the Coast History of the U.S. Army Engineers at Galveston - first attempt at construction of the Jetties began in 1875 and continued off and on until construction of current jetties began August 1891 and completed in 1897.
