Abstract

This research is unique in its development and applications of theoritical concepts in the determination of peak runoff for Houston area watersheds during 24 hour 100 year storm events. These storm events were found to occur exclusively during tropical storms and hurricanes. A rainfall model to determine hourly rainfall during tropical storms and hurricanes was utilized to simulate rainfall events and their subsequent runoff. The hourly rainfall distribution for tropical storms and hurricanes was found superior to the hourly rainfall distribution as recommended by the Harris County Flood Control District (HCFCD) in the determination of peak streamflow for Houston area drainage basins.
