Abstract

Heated effluents from several types of industrial discharges may produce thermal pollution. The effects of above-normal temperatures are difficult to evaluate because they are long-term, sublethal, and interrelated with other complex environmental factors. This discussion revolves about the theoretical effect of high temperatures on marine fishes at all stages of their life histories, including reproduction, development and growth, food and feeding, physiology, behavior, and ecology. Emphasis is placed upon the effects that effluent high temperatures, both alone and in combination with other substances may have on the physico-chemical environment. The need is stressed for careful surveys and a reasonably detailed knowledge of the environment prior to the selection of sites where thermal pollution may occur.
