Abstract

This report on the Port of Houston, Tex., is published as No. 24 of the Port Series. It supercedes a similar report published in 1948. The reports in the Port Series cover the principal United States seaports and are compiled and published jointly by the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, and the Maritime Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, under authority of Section 8 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920. In accordance with the agreement for cooperation between the two agencies, the chapters on Port and Harbor Conditions and Port and Harbor Facilities were prepared by the Domestic Ports Branch, Board of Engineers for River and Harbors after personal inspections of the facilities at the port. The chapter on Port Administration and Federal Services; Port and Terminal Services and Charges; and Steamship Services were prepared by the Port Development Staff, Maritime Adminstration, U.S. Department of Commerce. Acknowledgement is made of the valuable assistance rendered by the District Engineer, U.S. Army Engineer District, Galveston, Tex.; various port organizations; shipping and transportation companies; facility owners; city officials; and other local interests in the work of compiling data for this report. Unless otherwise noted, the information contained in this report was current in January 1959.
