Abstract
State biologists assisted U.S. Fish and Wildlife personnel in conducting the annual January midwinter inventory along the entire Texas Gulf Coast in 1971. Estimates of species, numbers, and locations of concentrations were recorded on tape from aircraft. The traditional cruise type census was abandoned for inland coastal areas from Corpus Christi to Port Arthur. Aerial transects were flown in this area in an effort to provide more realistic trend information. All coastal bays and the inland areas from Corpus Christi to Brownsville were flown by the old cruise method. It was felt that these areas did not meet the basic qualifications for transect inventory.
