Abstract

This report on the Ports of Galveston and Texas City, Tex., is published as No. 23 of the Port Series. It supersedes a similar report published in 1948. The reports in the Port Series cover the principal United States seaports and are compiled and published jointly by the Corps of Engineers, US Army, and the Maritime Administration, US Department of Commerce, under authority of Section B of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920. In accordance with the agreement for cooperation between the two agencies, the chapters on Port and Harbor Conditions; Port and Harbor Facilities; those parts of the chapter on Transportation Services which discuss railroads, inland waterways, and highways were prepared by the Domestic Ports Branch, Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors after personal inspections of the facilities at the ports. The chapters on Port Administration and Federal Services; Port and Terminal Services and Charges; Territory Tributary; and the part of the chapter on Transportation Services which discusses steamship services were prepared by the Port Development staff, Maritime Administration, US Department of Commerce. Acknowledgement is made of the valuable assistance rendered by the District Engineer, US Army Engineer District, Galveston, Tex., various port organizations; shipping and transportation companies; facility owners; city officials; and other local interests in the work of compiling data for this report. Unless otherwise stated, the information contained in this report was current in January 1959.
